The event will present the findings of a study commissioned by Innovate UK to assess the feasibility of establishing an Advanced Manufacturing Demonstrator co-located with a higher-level skills training in the Manchester City Region to speed up the adoption and deployment of Industry 4.0 technologies by small and medium sized businesses across a range of sectors and grow smarter supply chains.

The scope and scale of the demonstrator was shaped through extensive consultations with manufacturers and other organisations to arrive at a new generic model designed to meet the expressed needs of manufacturing SMEs in Greater Manchester, but which can be modified and rolled out into other regions. In Manchester the food and drink and packaging industries emerged as the priority sectors that the demonstrator should aim to support.

As part of the day we will be hearing from the report’s author Dr Marilyn Comrie OBE FRSA, Robin Wilson, High Value Manufacturing lead for Innovate UK, City leaders shaping Greater Manchester’s Local Industrial Strategy, Salford University who have 20 years+ experience designing low cost food automation and robotics solutions, industry primes as well as the National Skills Academy for Food & Drink.

The event will present recommendations for implementation in the City Region as part of the Local Industrial Strategy and will also highlight the relevance of the proposed demonstrator model to the objectives of the Made Smarter Programme and the expected need for similar digital manufacturing demonstrators in other cities and regions across the UK.
