Modern Energy Cooking Services-Technology Research Innovation for International Development (MECS-TRIID)

Around 3 billion people around the world are forced to use dirty and harmful fuels and methods to cook food with, causing a variety of respiratory and other health problems.

3.8 million premature deaths each year from indoor air pollution

The World Health Organisation reports 3.8 million people die prematurely each year from illnesses such as stroke, pneumonia, heart disease and cancer caused by the inefficient use of solid fuels and kerosene for cooking. Do you have ideas or technologies to make energy-for-cooking cleaner and more sustainable in developing parts of the world? Would a grant of £30,000 help fund vital research and move your plans forward?

The Modern Energy Cooking Services-Technology Research Innovation for International Development (MECS-TRIID) is a new initiative that enables the Modern Energy Cooking Services programme, funded by the Department for International Development. It can pay towards early-stage research projects in support of innovative ideas or concepts that facilitate a transition to modern energy cooking services in countries supported by DFID.

Businesses of any type and size can apply from anywhere in the world, but the project must benefit at least one of the countries supported by DFID. Join one of the webinars to find out more.

Delivered by Loughborough University and supported by the Knowledge Transfer Network, the aim of the initiative is to reduce barriers to innovation to advance technology in MECS and enable more sustainable and accessible cooking systems in the countries that need it most.

MECS-TRIID has four themes:

  • Energy storage
  • Grid and infrastructure adaptability
  • Alternative fuels
  • Business models, Gender, Accessibility (vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities) and inclusion in MECS

MECS-TRIID provides 100% funding of up to GBP30,000 per project. The competition is open now and closes at 23:59 hours BST on 4th June 2019. You can read more and APPLY here.
