BIA release research publication titled “Shaping the future: What areas of science are most important to UK bioindustry?”

The UK BioIndustry Association (BIA) have released a paper, “Shaping the future: What areas of science are most important to UK bioindustry?” It summarises the conclusions and recommendations reached through the “Shaping the future” workstream. This workstream was held throughout 2018 to identify areas of science that are crucial to the ongoing success of bioindustry, led by the BIA’s Science and Innovation Advisory Committee. This document was supported by KTN’s Knowledge Transfer Manager for Bioinformatics, Alexander Henzing.

The ‘Shaping the future’ workstream recognised that significant investments have been made in initiatives such as the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, the Medicines Discovery Catapult, the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre, and the UK Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance.

Some of the key conclusions and recommendations found in the paper include:

  • Discovery science, analytical science and bio-processing science were identified as being critically important to the success of the bioindustry.
  • The funding of science must continue to support a wide range of discovery science, and also include appropriate support for analytical and bio-processing sciences.
  • A requirement to support discovery, analytical and bio-processing science should be built into the remits of the Councils of UKRI.
  • Peer review processes are essential for discovery, analytical and bio-processing science. Industrial involvement will benefit these processes.
  • Funding broad areas of science consistently is crucial to developing the health of the bio-industry.
  • Funded science programmes should include requirement for broad skills development in post-graduates and early career researchers.
