CyberASAP looks to help commercialise more academic ideas in the burgeoning cyber security space

Posted on: 18/12/2019

With this year‚Äôs cohort advancing their projects for Demo Day in February, we look ahead to 2020’s programme and invite you to register your interest.

With the global cybersecurity market continuing its stratospheric growth (according to research by Gartner, worldwide spending on cybersecurity is forecast to reach $133.7 billion in 2022) the opportunity to meet the challenges of keeping data safe have never been greater and look set to continue apace. Those opportunities are technological as well as commercial. And they call for great ideas.

Many of those ideas start life in academic teams in Universities all around the UK. What the CyberASAP programme is all about is helping turn those academic ideas into viable commercial products. How? Though a comprehensive programme of expert workshops, training, briefings and bootcamps to help teams through the complex journey from lab to market.

The programme culminates in a Demo Day where teams present their products to the commercial world. See it in action here. And if you are interested in attending the Demo Day to see products developed by this year’s cohort, please sign up for information here.

As we look ahead to 2020, the programme invites you to register your interest in CyberASAP either as an academic team or as a potential commercial collaborator or investor so that you are the first to hear about programme developments for 2020. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Any idea relating to cybersecurity is in scope
  • You must have an interest in commercialising the idea
  • Any UK University/Academic Institution is in scope
  • The Innovate UK competition details are likely to be available in January

Dr Alexios Mylonas from Bournemouth University Рand one of the current cohort Рhas spent time both in academia and previously in industry and describes CyberASAP as “the most eye opening experience”.

Find out more about where some of the previous year’s Alumni are in their journey from spin-out to scale-up here Рas you will see, the outcomes range from acquisition by tech giants like Google to securing early stage investment from seed funds. What unites all of the participating cohorts is their appreciation for a programme which has helped provide them with the expert guidance needed to commercialise their projects.

In aiming to help accelerate the roll out of great cyber security ideas, CyberASAP presents an opportunity for academics to develop and market their products and services, and creates a dynamic interface between them and the business and investment community.

If you are interested in finding out more about how you could participate in CyberASAP – as an academic, business or investor – please register here so we can keep you abreast of the latest developments.
