DTA placements - energy employers invited to apply

Employers in the energy sector are invited to apply to have a PhD student work on their energy project.

KTN has teamed up with University Alliance to provide PhD students on the Doctoral Training Alliance (DTA) energy programme the opportunity to undertake a three-month industry placement in an SME.

Employers in the energy sector are being invited to apply to secure a PhD student to work on an energy project.  If you can offer:

  • short projects and/or placements ranging from between 1 to 3 weeks or
  • short placements ranging from 1 to 3 months

please contact Ben Diette, DTA Programmes and Communications Officer, before 1st December 2018.  (This initial deadline will allow the team to assess interest and opportunities; with sufficient interest, the scheme can hopefully continue after this date.)

The DTA is a collective action to create internationally competitive research collaborations through the vehicle of providing cohort-based, industrially-relevant doctoral training making use of the wealth of research and staff development expertise and experience available across the University Alliance, a collection of 13 universities.

DTA Energy connects students and staff from across Alliance institutions.  It focuses on producing doctoral graduates equipped with the skills and experience to tackle the global challenge of ensuring future security and sustainability of energy supplies, and the management of energy demand.

DTA Energy students are involved in a wide variety of research areas across the energy field.

Their research has been grouped into the following categories:

  • Conventional energy sources
  • Renewables
  • Control
  • Materials
  • Hydrogen
  • Engines
  • Governance

A selection of research project titles the students are working on are shown below.  This is not an exhaustive list, but a small sample.

  • Advanced Thermal Modelling of Electronic Systems
  • Assessing organic carbon maturity using Laser Raman approaches.
  • The Role of Visualisation and Augmented Reality in Increasing Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment
  • Energy Storage Systems: Coordinated and Optimised Control for an Economic Integration to the Power Grid

Employers will benefit from valuable research expertise whilst students gain skills and experience.  Other benefits include the transfer of knowledge and skills of the student into a business, the opportunity for researchers to bring new ideas, undertake studies and analyse data and the opportunity to trial a potential future employee before recruitment.

Employers providing a placement will be required to pay students for the full duration of their placement at least at the National Minimum Wage.

Full-time students are expected to have completed their transfer/upgrade to PhD before they are eligible to undertake a placement. It is expected that placements take place either over the summer of a student’s second year or after submission of their thesis.
