Edwards Symposia Series forthcoming workshop - New Horizons in Soft Matter

Posted on: 13/07/2018

The third event in the Edwards Symposia Series takes place in September highlighting the latest developments in soft matter science.

Following a successful second inaugural event in September 2017, and with the support of Unilever, the Edwards Symposia Series will run annually for the next three years. This series marks a fitting tribute to the life and work of Professor Sir Sam Edwards FRS, one of the great scientific minds of the 20th Century. Sir Sam played a pivotal role in bringing advances in the physical sciences to bear on major industrial problems.
This series will continue to highlight the latest developments in soft matter science with a particular (but not exclusive) emphasis on theoretical and mathematical models, and on how these models can inform industrial processes, materials, and design.

The programme of talks will include leading academic speakers, who will convey their latest scientific work, aiming to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary discussions across the industry/academia boundary. Industrial challenge presentations will be given by Unilever, Merck Sharp & Dohme, ExxonMobil and Pepsico. Other highlights include a dedicated exhibition and elevator pitches from early stage researchers.

In 2018, the workshop focusses on the following soft matter areas (including their industrial challenges):

  • Microscale fluid mechanics
  • Jamming and flow
  • Soft interfaces
  • Responsive and programmable soft matter

This event will take place on Wednesday 5th – Friday 7th September 2018 at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge. Further information, including a Programme on the event web page.  The programme will include a drinks reception on Wednesday 5th and on Thursday 6th there will be a workshop dinner at Gonville & Caius College.
