Posted on: 20/02/2020

In this interview, David talks about how AquAffirm‚Ñ¢: a unique portable arsenic sensor is helping to save lives.

Background

Bio Nano Consulting, together with academic partners at Imperial College, have developed AquAffirm‚Ñ¢: a unique portable arsenic sensor that uses technology modified from familiar glucose self-tests manufactured in the billions each year to create a step-change improvement in arsenic testing.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have estimated that at least 140 million people globally drink water containing arsenic above safe levels, causing the deaths of of more than 40,000 people each year.

Following funding and support from Innovate UK and the Newton Fund at every stage of the product design, Bio Nano Consulting developed AquAffirm™ as a new tool for determining levels and testing of arsenic in water in developing countries.

UK Research and Innovation¬†have recently launched a new Demonstrate Impact Programme under the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The fund is now at Round 2 stage and aims to “Increase Impact Through Innovation in Developing Countries”. KTN and Innovate UK are hosting two competition briefing events in March. If you would like to come and hear about other case studies similar to Dr Sarphie, would like more information about the GCRF Demonstrate Impact Programme, or would like to attend either (or both!) events, please click on the registration link(s) below.

About GCRF

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) will invest up to £9.3 million in demonstration-stage projects. The projects must have the potential to transform lives in developing countries, through market-creating innovation. We will support projects that address one of ten global societal challenges recognised in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the development of innovative processes, products and services.

These projects should lead to the deployment of those innovations within developing countries.

Round 2 of the competition opens on the 2nd March 2020 and closes on the 6th May 2020.

*** Our London Competition Briefing event has limited places left so please be quick if you wish to register. We do however still have availability at the Edinburgh event on the 12th March. Links to register are below. ***
