Review of the High Temperature Performance of Composites Conference on 28th June

28th June The Knowledge Transfer Network, supported by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) alongside Composites UK, held the High Temperature Performance of Composites Conference at the IOM3 Headquarters on Euston Road in London.

The programme covered the main types of composite materials (PMC, CMC AND MMC), as well as end user perspectives from several different industries, including defence, aerospace and space. Funding for materials research was also discussed by Innovate UK.

Representing the industrial end user perspective, there were presentations from Rolls-Royce (aerospace), MBDA (defence) and Seraphim Capital (space). Bitrez and TISICS covered PMCs and MMCs respectively, while CMCs were covered by the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham, as well as by Lucideon and the National Composites Centre.

Some of the takeaways from the conference included the need to focus on cost, the renewed interest in Ceramic and Metal Matrix Composites for their high temperature capabilities, and space as a developing sector for composites. There were also ample networking opportunities during the three scheduled breaks, not only with the speakers but also with around the 60 delegates who attended.

Additionally, KTN will shortly be launching a Materials for Composites Special Interest Group which will be focused on opportunities for the chemical industry in developing materials for the different sectors using composites. Watch this space for further announcements about this.
