Posted on: 20/06/2018

The second round of funding for the ‘Support for SMEs to evaluate innovative medical technologies’ competition is set to open on 2nd July 2018.

Back in January 2018 the first round of funding opened for the competition ‘Support for SMEs to evaluate innovative medical technologies’, set up to support developers to evaluate their products in a real world clinical setting. The first round had funding of up to £1m and was delivered by Innovate UK in partnership with the Office for Life Sciences (OLS). The winners from the first round have now been announced, covering a wide range of approaches. These include products to reduce the rates of catheter-acquired infections; improve cancer outcomes; reduce falls amongst the elderly; guide treatments of chronic wounds; improve self-management of diabetes; and more reliably and conveniently measure heart rates in newborns.

And now we’re approaching the launch of the second round of funding under the competition. Up to a further £1.5 million will be made available, with the competition opening on 2nd July. This round will focus on developers of innovative medical devices, diagnostics and regulated digital health products, who want to collect and analyse clinical performance and cost effectiveness data within an NHS setting.

Medical technologies (medtech) save lives and improve our health every day. They also offer opportunities to save costs in overstretched healthcare systems, and to contribute to the growth of our economy. The UK has a diverse and vibrant medtech sector which continues to generate an exciting pipeline of innovative products and services for the NHS and global markets. If you’re interested in medtech, then you can read more about the sector here.

The Knowledge Transfer Network’s Medical Technologies Competition Briefing Event & Webinar is being held on Tuesday 3rd July 2018 at 10:00am at King’s Place in London. This free event will provide details of the funding competition and the application process. Key stakeholders including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) will also be present to explain the wider context and support that’s available.

If you can’t make the event in person, then you can join the meeting via webinar. You can view the agenda and register your attendance for either the event or the webinar here.
