NPL workshop on measurement challenges in electric and hybrid vehicles and aircraft

Posted on: 16/08/2018

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is running a workshop on 4 September on measurement challenges in electric and hybrid vehicles and aircraft.

Held in Teddington, the event will bring together keynote speakers from the automotive and aerospace sectors to share, explore and identify the opportunities for measurement to help accelerate developments and adoption of electrical powertrain technologies for electric and hybrid vehicles and aircraft.

The topics of discussion for the workshop will be electrical machines, power electronics and drives, power distribution and magnetic, electronic and thermal materials.  Please note: energy storage will not be covered in this workshop.

Measurement science is crucial to all stages of product development and manufacturing. Applications range from understanding material performance under harsh conditions to helping an SME work with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to verify an innovative product and gain entry to the supply chain.

NPL is dedicated to working with UK industry on current and future measurement needs and their solutions, including:

  • Verification of new products, components and materials intended to¬†operate under extremely demanding life cycles
  • Accurate characterisation of material properties under a wide range of conditions to improve modelling, design and material selection
  • Innovation in the use of sensors and data both for prototyping and in-service health monitoring and management.

As part of its support for electric and hybrid vehicles, NPL is developing a funding strategy to address measurement challenges within this field.  The strategy will be published in a report available to all stakeholders who attend the workshop.
