The webinar presented the findings of the output report and gave delegates the opportunity to talk directly with representatives who went on the Mission in a Q&A Session. It also provided a fantastic networking opportunity. KTN hosted this event on behalf of Innovate UK and was presented by Dr Sandeep Sandhu, KTN, Robin Kennedy, KTN, Jon Kingsbury, KTN, and Agata Samojlowicz, Innovate UK.
Thank you to the Speakers and Organisers, and to everyone who attended!
To help UK businesses become truly global enterprises through strategic collaboration, Innovate UK launched its Global Expert Missions in October 2017. Delivered by KTN, the missions provide an expert-led evidence base to strengthen Innovate UK’s global investment strategy: how and where it should invest to create UK business opportunities in partnerships with key economies.
Each mission has representatives from UK business, policy and research community, who:
1. Gather market insights and build expert foresights on new and emerging innovation sectors
2. Identify opportunities for international collaboration
3. Build a portfolio of technological and business priorities that will elevate the UK as the ‘Partner of Choice’ in future innovation partnerships with global partners
4. Facilitate international dialogues for the UK business community
5. Align innovation policy and unlock regulatory barriers for future partnerships
Between June 2018 and October 2019, three Global Expert Missions took place to Singapore, the USA and Israel to better understand their research and innovation landscapes and to establish potential opportunities for collaboration in the cyber security sector.
Singapore has been identified as a potential market to consider for collaboration in the cyber security sector, including for the development of bilateral funding competitions. Singapore is a strategic partner for the UK and acts as the gateway to the Asian market. The UK and Singapore have a common language, share research base priorities, and already have an existing relationship as they signed an MoU in 2015 on Cyber Security Cooperation and a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2018, agreeing to deliver cyber security capacity building programmes to Commonwealth Member States.
The USA has also been flagged as a potential market to consider for collaboration with the UK; the USA is the world leader in cyber security innovation in both market size and investments in R&D. In addition, the UK and USA also share a common language and are members of the ‘Five Eyes’.
Israel is the world’s second largest home for the cyber security industry after the USA. Historically, security has always been a top priority for Israel, both socially and politically. Israel has the world’s most impressive cyber intelligence unit, Unit 8200, which is also the largest unit of the Israel Defence Force. Israel is also home to cyber security R&D centres for many leading American companies, including RSA, IBM, Microsoft, Akamai, Intel McAfee, Palantir, Intuit, AVG, F5 Networks, Palo Alto Networks and PayPal.
This webinar provided an holistic and wide viewpoint of the capabilities identified during the Global Expert Missions and showcased key opportunities for UK businesses who were interested in international collaboration.
